FanDuel announced late last week that it would soon roll out its fifth sports offering in the United States with the imminent debut of English Premiere League (EPL) soccer contests in the last week of October. The EPL games join NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL contests already available on FanDuel, which has taken a decidedly more measured and deliberate approach in adding sports to its portfolio as compared to the more aggressive pace kept by main rival DraftKings.
“Our ultimate goal is for fans of all sports to experience what FanDuel has to offer,” said Nigel Eccles, CEO of FanDuel, in the company’s official press release about the announcement. “As we continue to enhance our core product, we look forward to giving the millions of US soccer fans access to the same game day excitement that bring other sports fans to our platform.”
Eight-Player Rosters, $60K Salary Cap
FanDuel made its long-awaited UK debut in August of this year after the approval of the gambling license it had applied for back in November 2015, and kicked its platform off by offering EPL contests to its customer base there.
As per the aforementioned press release, the main features of the U.S.-based EPL contests are as follows:
- 8-player fixed roster– Users will draft a standard FanDuel roster consisting of a goalkeeper, two defensemen, three midfielders and two forwards.
- $60,000 budget – Users will be required to pick whatever players they want, staying under a $60,000 salary cap.
- Variety of scoring categories – The product will launch with a variety of players stats, including chances created to shots on target. Friends Mode for EPL will be available later this season.
- Friends Mode, which FanDuel introduced before NFL season and is already available for NFL, NBA and NHL contests, will soon be available for EPL contests as well.
Size and Scope of GPPs to be Announced
There’s been no specific insight provided by FanDuel into the size and scope of EPL GPPs that will be initially be offered, but DraftKings, which has been running EPL contests for multiple seasons, offers five-figure prize pools for its contests on a regular basis.
