DraftKings has announced a $4 million Fantasy Basketball World Championship (FBWC) in which 100 qualifiers will battle it out live for a top prize of $1 million.
Finalists will enjoy a prize package worth $46,500, which includes a five-night stay in San Diego, $1,000 cash for airfare, and an FBWC ticket to the March 18 event, hosted at the Hard Rock Hotel. In total, 100 tickets are up for grabs, with players allowed to qualify up to three times each.
The live final sleep will be based on the seven NBA games which will take place that Friday between 7-8:30 PM EST.
Players can win their ticket in qualifiers of $3, $300 and $1,000, or take their chances at $5, $27, $65 and $100 satellites. All 100 lineups in the final event will win cash, with the last 30 entries taking $15,000 and first place pocketing $1 million. The second place finisher will take home a respectable $400,000 payday, with third walking away with $200,000 and forth banking $150,000.
Eight players have already won their entry into the event including Assani Fisher, who has already qualified twice, ‘shanerh1’, ‘lethalbizzle’, ‘shawnzhan’, ‘honkee80’, ‘maxdalury’, ‘MM93’ and ‘cjkait’. More players will join that list after another 7 PM qualifier tonight.
$2 million prize pool increase
This year’s championship sees a $2 million bump in the prize pool compared with the $2 million total offered in the same DraftKings contest last year. That contest played out in Las Vegas, with grinder Adam Goulet taking the top spot and the $1 million first-place prize after the Boston/Detroit game went into overtime. Andrew “Makisupa” Wiggins, former owner of DraftDay, secured second place for a $250,000 score. Player ‘seida’ rounded out the top three, banking $150,000 for his efforts.
While Vegas was the Fantasy Basketball Championship location of choice last year, operators have canceled their Nevada events due to state regulators’ decision to rule DFS as gambling. In October, the Gaming Control Board declared that DFS sites must leave the state until they acquire a proper gambling license.
