DraftKings and Major League Soccer (MLS) have announced a partnership which will make the DFS site the official daily fantasy sports destination for the league in both the US and Canada.
“The increasingly popular daily sports space is a proven fan development tool that we’re excited about,” said Gary Stevenson, President and Managing Director of MLS Business Ventures in a press release. “You’ll see deep integration within our many digital platforms and you’ll see a number of club deals. We are delighted to partner with DraftKings to give our passionate fans another innovative way to experience the sport that they love.”
Fans can now choose from several MLS contests on the site, and according to DraftKings, can expect more “new and innovative” game structures in the near future.
Aside from Mondogoal and Fantasy Gol, few US facing sites had focused on the sport previously.
“Soccer is an incredibly exciting sport that is underrepresented in daily fantasy and we’re going to change that in a big way,” said DraftKings CEO Jason Robins. “We are truly looking forward to collaborating with MLS on unique contests and exclusive one-of-a-kind experiences that will thrill their passionate fan base and thoroughly engage the DraftKings community.”
The partnership will fit nicely with the DraftKings’ recent deal with ESPN, the main broadcaster of MLS games. While soccer viewership is dwarfed by football, baseball and basketball on the US, the addition of an MLS fantasy sports option should serve to create higher ratings for the sport.
The major leagues choose sides
DraftKings can now boast partnerships with five major sports organizations: Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Hockey League (NHL), NASCAR and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). For its part, competitor FanDuel has struck deals with several NFL teams and serves as the official daily fantasy partner of the NBA.
